“Sanskrit has 96 words for love; ancient Persian has 80, Greek three, and English only one. This is indicative of the poverty of awareness or emphasis that we give to that tremendously important realm of feeling. Eskimos have 30 words for snow because it is a life-and-death matter to them to have exact information about the element they live with so intimately. If we had a vocabulary of 30 words for love ... we would immediately be richer and more intelligent in this human element so close to our heart. An Eskimo probably would die of clumsiness if he had only one word for snow; we are close to dying of loneliness because we have only one word for love. Of all the Western languages, English may be the most lacking when it comes to feeling.” - Robert Johnson, “The Fisher King and the Handless Maiden“
Valentine’s Day is here, and we are bombarded by the word “love.” This time of year can already feel lonely for those facing challenges in their relationships. These challenges are felt even more so this year with the added elements of social distancing and disconnection due to the pandemic. What if we could use our greatest longings, loneliness, and challenges as roads to discovering a deeper love we maybe never knew possible? This is a fierce love that is defined as “I complete me,” rather than an external person, place, or thing completing you.
The separation we are experiencing in our country prompts the question: How do you want to fill the divide? This division can be filled with either fear or love. You cannot connect outside unless you are connected inside. Although you may be separated physically from loved ones, now is a critical time to nourish the connection to yourself. Here are four steps to BE LOVE, here and now:
Labels are created in your mind; they are the constructs upon which you build and view your life. But you must become wise to the fact that a label is not the actual reality of your experience. Rather it is directing to a reference point so you can try to understand our human experience. Unfortunately, this is not how we use language. We get lost in the label and believe them to be our reality. I invite you to awaken to your mind’s constructs so you can become the true author of the life you were born to live.
If you notice any resistance to the word “love,” your definition may be tainted by pain and resentment. When we turn away from the grief of the past, we are left with undigested emotion. So, you may ask, “How do we digest this emotion?” I invite you to pay attention to this feeling instead of pushing it away, as every heart activation is an invitation. By letting go of labels in the mind, you become available to what is activated in your heart. This presence allows you to accept, feel and heal. When we are present we are able to feel the feeling, and through that digestion, we heal as the energy of emotion is released. Think of the mind like a weed and the heart as a seed. When you shift your focus from the mind to the heart, you become the alchemist of the emotions of your heart. Extend your rays of awareness onto these seeds, watch them take root, and grow the vines that flower.
Open yourself to the new possibilities that live in the present. This second step is only available when you let go of the known labels of love and open to the unknown and unexplored experiences that lay waiting for you. Anais Nin said, “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” When you trust and have courage, you shift to an abundance and a “yes” mindset. An inner “yes” keeps your heart open and trusting to the mystery. How are you greeting the uncertainty of life? Life is a mystery, you are a mystery, and this moment is a mystery. Through the powerful release found by saying “yes” and feeling our emotions, you immediately transform what was an obstacle into an opportunity. This is the definition of success. Success that guides one from repeating the same cycle of living in fear, to opening to new and abundant possibilities.
DIVINE WOMEN'S HEALING CIRCLE
You have a choice in each and every moment. Our lives reflect what we value most. Ask yourself: What am I devoted to? At the end of my life, what will I remember? I often call this your North Star. Once you define this, notice the ways that fearful thinking stands in the way of your North. The tendencies of your mind prevent you from being in your authentic truth. Attention is your most powerful asset and the nourishing agent that keeps you in an authentic alignment. As you step into life each day, set an intention to orient your life. Be centered and choose a value such as: love, peace, truth, gratitude, kindness, or freedom, and allow yourself to be guided through life by becoming a conduit for this value. Each value holds a vibration, a frequency, that emanates from your actions. Every choice you make will be empowered with the vibrations of your value.
Start each day with your orienting value to bring an embodied presence to whatever is happening in the moment. Every day you choose a value and you empower it by embodying its energy. Insert your value at the end of “Let me be...” to create a mantra and embody your value in each moment. Enrich this practice by grounding yourself in the nature that surrounds you. Take a moment to reflect and to get in touch with wonder, curiosity, and awe. So, as you walk down the street or step into your backyard, recalibrate and connect to nature, yourself, then the hearts of others. This anchoring allows you to navigate more mindfully through the mystery of life. In moments where you find yourself saying “I have to…,” shift your language to “I choose to because…” This adjustment brings you back into your alignment. When you embody a value in this way, you go from living mindlessly to mindfully. You fill yourself up with love by taking care of your own needs. The continual embodiment of an orienting value allows the creation of a life aimed towards your most authentic truth.
Mark Twain said, “Kindness is the language the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” These four steps help you align with a deeper value and connection to yourself. When aligned in this way you no longer need any outside circumstance to fulfill you. Allow this year to be a turning point where love is a relationship that begins from the inside out. I wish you a life of abundant L.O.V.E.
